Title

As Thousands Cheer Playbill

Subject

Marketing of Broadway show, "As Thousands Cheer"

Description

Ethel Waters was hailed by most theater critics of both african american papers and white newspaper as the top performer in "As Thousands Cheer". Ethel Waters, and her number "Supper Time" were often cited as the main attraction of the show, and yet we still see a reluctance to picture an african american woman as a marketing tool. Many people saw this role as her "breakout role" into white broadway shows but it would take a long time for her to be pictured in propaganda promoting broadway shows.
